The school: Realschule Friedrichstadt

The secondary school Realschule Friedrichstadt is situated on the edge of the city centre within walking distance to Düsseldorf’s famous main shopping and strolling avenue Königsallee next to the Old Town and to Düsseldorf main station. The school was founded as a middle school for boys in 1905 and still uses its original building which has been renovated and modernized several times to provide modern facilities and equipment. For forty years, our school has been co-educative and has nearly 500 students at the age from 10 to 16 and a staff of 25 teachers. Each of our 17 classes uses its own room for most subjects. Science, PE and music have special rooms.

Our students leave the school with a GCSE equivalent after year 10. Some of them start an apprenticeship, whereas many go on to a grammar school to prepare their A-levels.

Besides well-prepared teaching by highly motivated and competent staff, we develop the responsibility and social competence of our pupils who run their own school shop and take part in mediation programmes. In many areas such as culture projects and career guidance we entertain partnerships and work with experts from outside school.

The school has been certified for the high standard of developing each pupil’s individual unique talents, the Buddy project and our focus on culture, integrating music, theatre and the arts in the curriculum as well as in extracurricular activities. For more than five years, we have taken part in a nationwide project that helps students to explore culture.

A second focus of our work is on language. We give extra lessons in German and concentrate on the use of the language in other subjects, too. English is obligatory for everybody, but we offer further tuition and extracurricular activities like a reading club for younger pupils and an English plus class to prepare students for grammar school. In the beginning of the 2015/2016 term we started a bilingual class that gets extra English lessons for two years to prepare History and Geography lessons taught in English from year 7 on.

For over a decade, we have taken year 10 students to a one-week trip to England to observe the culture and speak the language they have been studying for nine years. To give them the possibility to get into much closer contact to Britain, we would be very glad to find a partner school in the United Kingdom. Besides a students‘ exchange, we are very interested in teachers‘ exchange and common project work.
